RECENTLY I HAVE EXPERIENCED SEVERAL DEJA VU MOMENTS. I am not sure if it is old age or that I truly feel we are circling back in history. I am, of course, reflecting on the history of nursing informatics and how far, but yet how little, we have progressed in the last 25 years. * On the positive side, I am extremely pleased that the recent NLN Position Statement, The Preparation of Nurses to Practice in a Technology-Rich Environment: An Informatics Agenda, has received so much coverage within the health care community. (See www.nln.org/aboutnln/PositionStatements/informatics_052808.pdf). It is exciting that the NLN is taking the lead in the integration of informatics into the nursing curriculum. AND IT IS FITTING, AS THE NLN HAS A LONG HISTORY OF PROMOTING INFORMATICS. Informatics and the NLN In 1985, I was extremely fortunate to be asked to join the Executive Committee of the NLN's newly established National Forum on Computers in Health Care and Nursing (NFCHCN), along with Roy Simpson, William Holzemer, Judith Ronald, Patricia Tymchyshyn, Karen Reider, and Susan Grobe. As you can see from the name of the group, informatics was not part of our vocabulary. Our committee was formed only a few years after the establishment of the journal Computers in Nursing (now Computers, Informatics Nursing). Dr. Gary Hales distributed early versions of this journal by mailing copies of mimeographed sheets. For those too young to remember, mimeographed sheets, or stencils, were the predecessors to photocopying. (Check out wikipedia at http://en.wikipedia.org /wiki/Mimeograph_machine.)
