Description

3, 4-Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA or Ecstasy) is a synthetic amphetamine analogue. It is well known as a substance of abuse and carries the reputation of producing euphoria, mild hallucinatory effects and a sense of emotional empathy. Although originally synthesized in by Merk in 1914, the psychoactive properties of MDMA were not widely known until the late 1960s. By the year 2000 between 5% and 10% of American college students reported Ecstasy use (Strote, Lee & Wechsler 2002). It has been a popular party drug at "raves" and has also had a steady following in small group settings. Part of the rapid increase in use of this drug has been associated with its perceived safety (Strote, Lee & Wechsler 2002; Spruit 2001). The method of action of MDMA is believed to be associated with its effect on the activity of serotonin and dopamine neurons in the cerebral cortex (Colado, O'Shea & Green 2003). It is thought that this unique combination of activity mediates most of the psychological effects of the drug. While contamination of any unregulated substance can occur, sampling studies have found that tablets of Ecstasy generally contain MDMA (Spruit 2001). This makes allegations of the effects of such tablets reasonably reliable for an illicit pharmaceutical.
